GetDigital North East

On Thursday 17th March 2016 Wonderstuff attended GetDigital North East, held at CastleGate, to meet with the top Creative and Digital Media Companies in the North East! Amongst the 42 different stalls and workshops displaying website design, graphic design, animation and more – we noticed that most people were drawn towards the Hammerhead VR stall, where you could try their Oculus Rift glasses. We had to give it a go.

Above is our junior designer, Linda, trying a new cheese commercial that Hammerhead VR has created. Is this how our future commercials will be? We are excited about the digital future, whatever it may look like! One thing is for sure – this was a new and fun way to experience a product.

We also attended the GetDigital Talk where the Keynote Theme was ‘Talent, Recruitment, Development and Retention’ – to inspire more awareness of digital creativity in the North East and the hiring of more creative talent. The talk touched upon how we can improve the educational system so that new creative talents seeking jobs and internships are more prepared for the industry. Guest speakers from Sunderland University talked about how they always try to improve the “gap” in education and how it is hard to keep up with the ever-changing technology. They also talked about how they want more involvement with people from the industry, and to work closer, to be able to prepare students for getting into the working world.

Here at Wonderstuff we believe this is very important too – and when we find an engaged class we’re happy to talk at universities and schools, to help them get a better inside view of what it is that we do and how they can prepare for it.

Cravens also took the stage, introducing their new idea to raise awareness of North East creativity with a show reel about the creative talents here in Newcastle (they showed Bristol’s showreel as an example). We can’t wait to see the outcome – as we know the creative talent here in the North East has a lot to offer. If you want to get your work featured in this exciting show reel, all you have to do it showcase your best work using the hashtag #ReelNewcastle “Lets show them what we can do!”

Overall the event was a complete success – we got to meet many engaging businesses and eager students and we were reminded how the fast the North East digital community is growing.
